A quick bee in my bonnet

Again, I find myself writing a blog post that I wasn't going to write 10 minues ago. But there is a bee in my bonnet and tweeting it and/or facebook status updates are not going to do this bee justice.

So, if you've been following the news, or if you haven't today the French Senate passed a ban on full face veils for women. (Apologies for sending you to the Huffington-Puffington-Post and all it's liberaly raggy-ness). All that is needed for this to become law is for their president's signature.

That's not what bugs me though. France is stupid, we all can accept that as fact, and this is a really dumb law which is going to have lots of unintended consequences. Newsflash France, this is not going to help you with your "Muslim problem".

What is bugging me though is all sorts of Americans reveling in this. Conservative Americans, who claim to want less government in the lives of people. What is next? Will France ban the rosary, or statues of Mary, or ban priests from wearing their collars? Will they ban Mormons from wearing temple garments? Will they ban Jews from wearing head coverings and prayer shawls? And will this set precedence for other countries to follow suit? Will these same blockheads cheer that? Will they cheer it when it's their religion under attack? Or is it because it's Islam and Islam is not the most popular kid on the block these days? Recently Italy was told by the European High Court of Justice they can no longer hang crosses in Catholic schools! I didn't hear any cheering about that. And I guarantee, these same idiots will not cheer if stuff like this happens on the home front or to their religion.

The point is not about how people practice religion, that is a very tricky subject and one that needs to be dealt with kid gloves. What the point is this, we shouldn't be in a state of schadenfreude, or rejoicing in other's misfortune. We as Americans should be speaking out about this. Government meddling in the lives of people practicing their religion lawfully should bother all of us, no matter what the religion in question is.
